Welcome 12th CP

Today, you guys will get to blog. I will provide the initial topic, but feel free to go off on tangents, bring up issues, and ask questions.

So, the topic is sports. We can talk about this weekend's football games, the Phillies bid for the playoffs, your sports teams, or the irrelevancy of sports. So, read articles that interest you, write comments, and let's debate in a friendly manner!

If the Philles can sweep the braves this series itll put the nail in the braves coffin.
also jayson Werth is the best player in the mlb

I would like to talk about the phillies and how they are red hot right now. They have everthing going right now. Howard is hitting, like always in september. the pitching staff is coming to life, which is badly needed. Lidge is on a roll, along with the rest of the bullpen. Lets not forget about werths walk-off homer yesterday to cap of a 4 run rally to win the game. It should be a good seriers with the atlanta braves coming in today for a 3 game set. This seriers should be a good one!! LETS GO PHILLIES!!!

Kimberly Rotter said...

How many games are the Phillies ahead of the Braves? How do those teams match up?

Despite what's goin on in baseball I'd like to shift your attention to football and how the NCAA has pretty much forced Reggie Bush to give back his Heisman Trophy. In no way does what he did off feild take away from how dynamic and amazing he was during his college career. Do you think it was fair to take his trophy away?

Unknown said...

To Dan: i am not complete sure about werth being the best player in the mlb. Although i do agree with you that yesterday he was the best player out there on the field. i would have to say the best player in the mlb is Roy Halliday he goes out there everytime and he gives it his best. It doesnt matter if he is doing really bad or if he is PERFECT!! He is the one guy i want on my team, 100% well rounded player.

I was just curious what about sports attracts everyone to them, to me they just seem like a bunch of overly athletic people, whos skills could only generally be used for the sports they play, running around chasing (generally) a ball around. Not to meantion how grossly overpaid they are just to provide entertainment to people around the world.

Unknown said...

I agree with josh. The only thing that would make the phillies better is if they got jamie moyer back. And if they started utilizing the power they have in mike zagurski. He is one of the best relievers the phillies have in thier arsenal. Period.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Brian,

Why don't you explain why the trophy was taken away. I am sure people are unaware of what you are talking about.

Gregory,

My theory about sports is that it has taking the place of the primal urges in us (you know, we now longer have to hunt or kill, so we do sports). What do you think?

the phillies are 3 ahead right now and have a 3 game seires starting tonight against the braves so it could make or break their hopes for a three-pete for the NL East title, but the way the phillies are on fire right now no one could put them out, seeing as the Nats baat the braves at home last week we should have this one in the bag

THe Braves and the Phillies are in a tight spot in october the phillies are currently 3 games up and need to win the series coming up against the braves. THe phillies have thier three best pitches pitching in the series (the two roys and cole). But the task wont be easy. They got the braves aces coming up too.(Jurrjens, minor, and hanson)Either way the the phillies should be able to take 2 of 3 from the braves and put the nail in the coffin(as dan said before).

Unknown said...

While it makes sense that sports may take the place of hunting and etc. You only really watch the sports, you don't go out and actually play them. I would think that if one wanted to actually to satisfy the primal urges they have, they would actually go out and play them, not sit on their couches and give the least amount of physical effort actually possible for somebody to give to fill out their urges to kill.

Unknown said...

Gregory, I've heard others try to justify their giant pay by saying "Oh, they only get to play for x-amount of years." That's ridiculous. If they managed their money correctly, they could be set for life. It's likely they don't have any student loans to pay off because they caught a ball for a couple of months out of the year in high school.

i do agree that many baseball stars are over paid but i believe some football players are under paid, many ex football players are facing serious brain issues such as Alzheimer. and something a little off topic i believe movie stars are WAY over paid

Unknown said...

So, because they may face serious brain injury, they should be paid more? Football players know full well what they're getting into from the start.
It's not even like they provide a valuable service to society. It's football as a whole, not the players in particular that provide entertainment. Not so with actors.
While I agree that they're over paid as well, it's as gross an injustice as our 'athletes'.

micheal vick should be the starter for the eagles he did good for his first start in 4 years

eHemp Blog Staff said...

Eagles organization is young and lost most of the most important vertans. They are probably one of the youngest in the team. And the young unexperinced quarterback Kolb isn't right for the team. We need a veteran leader like Vick in there to step up and take charge. Eagles lost their game when Kolb was the QB and won with Vick (Granted it was against the lions)

tom said...

Kevin Kolb is a scrub.

i think that movie stars get good amout of money but i do agree that atheleds should get more money then actors

Phillies win...make that 8 strait for them!!! talk about being on fire? an amazing start from cole 8 strong innings only one run and a save from lidge. The braves rookie pitcher, who was not suppose to start, didnt do a bad job. he actually showed good stuff the only problem is that his defense behind him wasnt good. the braves should look to have a good future with him. i am not a braves fan at all but u have to give the rookie pitcher props. With the philies on a roll i think its good to mention that the magic number is now down to 8!!!! along with that the phillies are the first team in the nl with 90 wins. lets make it 91 tonite with roy halladay on the mound.

Unknown said...

jason werth isnt the best player in the league

Unknown said...

michael vick = eagles superbowl

Unknown said...

I do agree with... Karl Marx... They may get injured playing whatever sport it is that they play, but they do fully know what it is that they are going in to. If a prostitute gets injured doing what they do, it doesn't make what they do, or the money they make acceptable. Which brings me to the point that that is really what todays athletes are, is glorified prostitutes. People being payed to exploit their bodies and "physical abilities"

Unknown said...

Now the Phillies are 4 games ahead of the braves as of today. They have 2 games left in this series if they win one more game and play well the last 11 games of the season they should win the divison. Also their pitching rotation is by far the best rotation in baseball so they are gonna be extremly hard to beat in the playoffs.

dan said...

first nick vick should be starting and "karl" if sports player didnt contribute to society billons of people wouldnt spend money across the world for all diffrrent sports

Unknown said...

Jimmy Clausen is starting for the panthers this sunday. About time. THe panthers are gonna finish 14-2 and beat the eagles in the NFC Championship. Period.

Unknown said...

Even tho the phillies are red hot, there is one person that should be mention out of all of them. This player is Cole Hamels. He is 5-0 in his last 5 starts. not only that he has an era, earn run avg., of .49 in that run. Since the allstar break he is 6-3 with an era of 1.74 (second best in the mlb). Is he back to 08 form maybe. Who knows. i think he is...what about you?

Unknown said...

ok they might beat the eagles but they cant beat the broncos

dan said...

hamels halladay and oswalt are the best 1 2 3 pitcher rotaion of the NL or AL going into the play offs

Unknown said...

jimmy clausen is a scrub and the panthers were the only team foolish enough to waste a second round draft pick on him, he will amount to nothing as will the panthers. on the brightside they will get a high draft pick due to the fact they will lose there next 14 games.

Unknown said...

dan, I'm not saying that sports don't mean anything to anyone in the world, it's obvious that they do. I'm saying that it's the sport as a whole, and not the individual players that make up a team, that is important. If you took one player off a team and changed with another, one might be a bit better, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. If someone switched an actor out of a film, it wouldn't go over at all. You can only pull a 'Plan 9' once in the world of cinema.

dan said...

really dan the panthers?
and yes jayson werth=best player in the mlb

rebecca said...

im kinda interested if the philies won, but it's not really something i watch on a daily basis. i'll go to games but thats about it. i cant just sit on a couch and watch them for 2 hours. but in the end id like to know who wins.

Unknown said...

Gregory (What a fantastic name, by the way...) About sport stars being little more than glorified prostitutes, I don't think I can agree with you there. Sure, they're making a living off their bodies, but what then is that manual laborer or musician doing? You have to draw the line somewhere.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Good comments, and I would like to add to the discussion.

It may seem easy to dismiss sports, because, after all, they do not affect the world in a major way in that they do not affect trade between countries, economies, job creation, AIDs research, or retirement portfolios. Yet, they have the power to unite people, unite countries even, that have fractured populations. And that is powerful. Critics have said that it did South Africa so much good because they hosted the Wold Cup without incident. People now have hope for that fractured country, a country with much oppression, because they were able to unite behind a sports team and hold an international sports event.

I agree with Gregory to an extent and Karl Marx (...) to an extent. Today's athletes are to an extent over glorified prostitutes, but I also agree that musicians can be viewed as over glorified prostitutes as well. But manual laborers? I don't really think so.
We need manual laborers to live, they build our houses and the buildings we work in, they make our clothes, keep our pumbling systems running correctly, and so on. But you could also say that musicians and sports stars are necessary because they keep our morale up. But if both of these things are true, why are the sports stars and musicians paid more, and looked up to? I think that is the real question.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Grace,
Prostitution is inherently shameful, so I disagree with calling athletes and musicians that per se. Many little kids dream of becoming musicians and athletes because it is admired. No child dreams of being a prostitute. But, I do agree that they are overpaid.

Why are manual labors paid so poorly. Unfortunately, I think it is because technically anyone can be a manual laborer, all you need is a body. Not everyone can be a musician or athlete. It is a special skill. Why are they paid so well when not anyone can be a teacher or cop you may ask. Well that is because our society values music and athletics much more than education perhaps....?

Grace said...

Also, though this pertains to my last comment, I want to know why people are debating over why athletes or actors or all of those other over glorified do-nothings get paid x amount over one another, instead of debating over why they get paid more than construction workers, plumbers, electritians, the men who pick up our garbage. And if we're talking about risk of injury, some of these people have just as much of a risk, if not more than athletes. What about our police men and our firemen, and the EMTs who save peoples lives why aren't all of those people making millions of dollars?

Grace said...

I couldn't be a manual laborer. Well I could, but I wouldn't get much done.
But that doesn't make sense, these days you NEED an education to get by, maybe not 4 years of college, or even 2 all the time, but you can't really get by very well with less than a G.E.D. And education aside, what abotu safety, people value cops and firemen so much. When one of them dies it's all over the news, police men come from all around to attend their funerals. So if manual laborers and teachers aren't getting paid so much because "any one can do that job" or education is valued less, why aren't cops and firemen?

Unknown said...

Grace, I only mentioned manual laborers as an example of someone who makes a living off their body. It had nothing to do with their value in society. The saying holds true, the world needs ditch diggers.

Rotter-
I don't agree that prostitution is inherently shameful, though. Sure, it's taking the easy way out, but what's really wrong with it? (How is that any different than someone dropping out of high school to pump gas?)
You could even look at it as being better than casual sex. With prostitutes, no one's feelings are getting hurt; you're not potentially leading anyone on.
One of the reasons prostitutes are looked on with such scorn is because of their situation in life. It’s a sad fact that many prostitutes are ‘forced’ into their profession. (By way of addiction, desperation, etc.)
Since prostitution is illegal, it’s unregulated. If we legalized prostitution, we’d be able to eliminate many problems associated with it. Both clients and prostitutes could be checked for STDs (Much like the pornography industry), there would be less contact between the criminal and non-criminal elements of society (Abuse of sexworkers by their pimps would be greatly reduced now that prostitutes can report it to the police and, since turning to prostitution would no longer be ‘turning to a life of crime’, the profession wouldn’t attract the same kind of women. For that alone, prostitutes wouldn’t be so looked down upon.)
If these problems are solved, it just becomes a question of people’s personal reasons. I don’t mean to say that everyone who believes sex is a ‘special, sacred bond between a man and a woman’ thinks so due to religion, but generally most ‘family values’ can be attributed to it.
As the United States, we should do our best to try not to cater to any one set of people in particular. No one is forcing you to go to a prostitute if you don’t want to.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Grace,

Those are good questions. I am no expert, but I will give you my point of view. Why don't we pay cops, firefighters, even teachers more, you ask? Because think about it. Where does the money come from to pay those people? Taxes. We pay those professions through various taxes. But, for other jobs, corporations decide what to pay. We as a society are unwilling, it seems, to pay those professions more. People don't want more taxes.....Now, how we spend our taxes is a whole different, complicated discussion.

Grace said...

My point was more that if sports stars and actors and so forth are paid so disgustingly, why shouldn't those people be as well, because when it comes right down to it, they have more value in our world as far as what they contribute professionally.
Also, I agree completely with Karl Marx on prostitution.
