Scarlet Letter

Unfortunately, I have a family emergency and will not be in the next two days. But that does not mean I cannot help you. We will use the blog to communicate so you can keep analyzing the novel.

Please independently read chapter 20 and 21. Must take 6 marginal notes on the chapter and post them here.

Stories are due Thursday, January 7th.

Chp. 20:
1. dimmsdale and hester decide that theyre going to take the next boat to england.
2. when dimmsdale goes back to town he feels strange.
3. dimmsdale wants everyone to know that he's not the man they think he his.
4. dimmsdale is ignoring all the people of his church because he dosent want to say something evil.
5. dimmsdale tells chillingsworth that he no longer needs him and chillingworth wonders if he knows his true identity.
6. dimmsdale ends up writing a whole new sermon that he thinks is better and newer.

chp.21.
1. The town gathers by the scaffold again for the election of the new govenor.
2. hester and pearl await the celebration with sailors and natives.
3. pearl askes hester if dimmsdale is going to ask to her hands like he did at the brook.
4. hester is worried about being with dimmsdale because shes been alone for so long.
5. A sailor reveals to hester that chillingsworth will be coming with them on their trip because they need a doctor.
6. hester becomes paranoid and sees chillingsworth and he has a smirk on his face.

Chapter 20:
Dimmesdale and Hester are taking a boat to Europe

Hester knows a crew of a ship because of her charity work so she secured the three of them a trip on the next ship

Dimmesdale wants the people of the town to know that he’s not really who they think he is.

Chillingworth is afraid to ask Dimmesdale if he knows who is really is and Dimmesdale tells Chillingworth that he no longer needs any medical help

Dimmesdale changes his whole sermon to make a new one that is better than the one he already wrote

Chapter 21:
Everyone is in town at the marketplace to see the new governor be put in place.

The beginning of the book is being brought back up because they are at the scaffold where Hester originally got her punishment.

The native americans and sailors think Hester is an important person in society because she has a scarlet letter.

Sailors and Native Americans are known to be rebellious like which is ironic in the story because their in a puritan society.

Hester has tons of thoughts about Europe and her new life as she stands in the marketplace. She can’t wait to be free.

Hester finds out that Chillingworth is coming on the ship to Europe.

Chapter 20

1. The minister is changing as soon as he leaves the woods. pg 195
2.Hester and Dimmesdale plan to go to the Old Country (England) together. Pg 196
3. Hester, being a charitable person, became acquainted with many useful people, including the captain of the ship taking them overseas. Pg 196
4. Everything looks different to Dimmesdale now, but he dosn't know why. Pg 197-198.
5. Dimmesdale is strangely giddy. He imagines saying rude things to his church parishioners, including a group of children and then laughing about it.
6. Dimmesdale meets Mistress Hibbins; maybe she was casting a spell on him that made him act so weird.

- Hester & Dimmesdale plan to take a ship to Europe.
- Dimmesdale isn't the man everyone thinks he is.
- Dimmesdale is scared to talk to the people at his church because he doesn't want to corrupt them by saying something evil.

Chapter 20 Marginal Notes:

1. Dimmesdale is having a change in fortunes after him and Hester decide to sneak away to Europe.
2. They want to go to Europe because of his health conditions.
3. In 4 days they will sneak off in a ship that Hester knew about because of her friends she met doing charity work.
4. Dimmesdale now finds things that were once familiar to seem strange.
5. He passes people but doesn’t want to talk to them because he thinks he will hurt/poison their souls.
6. Dimmesdale tells Chillingworth he no longer wants medical help from him.
7. Dimmesdale burns his old sermon and writes a newer and better one.

Chapter 21 Marginal Notes:

1. A celebration of a new governor is occurring at the scaffold.
2. Pearl asks Hester whether the strange minister who does not want to acknowledge them in public will hold out his hands to her as he did at the brook.
3. Hester doesn’t respond because she is thinking about her escape.
4. One of the sailors tells Hester that Chillingworth will be joining them on their trip to Europe because they need a doctor on board.
5. Hester’s sense of anticipation is broken and she becomes very upset.
6. Hester looks in the crowd only to see Chillingworth smirking at her.

2. Hester found this boat because she is now a charitable person and friendly with the crew of a ship.

4. Dimmesdale runs into Mistress Hibbins and offers to be his escort the next time he visits the forest.

1. Everyone is in town for the elcetion of a new governor

2. This is the same setting as the beginning of the book.

3. Pearl wants Dimmesdale to hold her hand in public as he did in the the forest.

4. Hester is dreaming about her what her new life will be and is looking forward to getting rid of her loneliness.

5. Hester is snapped out of her dreaming by a sailor telling her that Chillingsworth will be joining them.

6. Chillingworth flashes Hester a grin to show that he knows and has ruined her plan of escaping

1)Dimmesdale is conflicted about his decision to move back to england with Hester and pearl
2)because Hester is conected to people they will move back in 4 days
3)Dimmesdale does not feel right about the moving back, but he also does not feel right about being a different person then he knows he is to the towns people
4)what mistress hibbins does and says show again the hypocrisy of the Puritan society
5)refusing chillingsworth’s treatments show’s in dimmesdale’s prospective of his life
6)Chillingworth not asking Dimmesdale why he does not want treatment foreshadows a conflict between the two in the future

Ch. 21
1)important part of the book because it is similar to the scene in the beginning of the book
2)critic on Puritan society because their celebrations are not happy
3)pearl wants to know if Dimmesdale will hold their hand to the boat like he did in the forest
4)because Chillingsworth is going on the ship it is obvious he has a plan to hurt one of the 3 somehow
5)Chillingsworth saying he is part of Hester’s group it increases tension
6)enough tension is building that something has to happen

Chapter 20:

1) Dimmesdale and Hester have decided to go to Europe, because it offers more anonymity and it's a better place for Dimmesdale's bad health.

2) Hester becomes acquainted with the crew memebers on the ship and the couple plans to secure passage on this vessel.

3) Dimmesdale kept blurting out comments to people and he had no control over it.

4) Dimmesdale is acting very paranoid because he noticed a familiar elderly woman and he avoids her.

5) Dimmesdale engagaes in oaths with one of the crew memebers that he's amking this plan with.

6) Chillingworth is too afriad to ask Dimmesdale if he knows who he actually is.

Chapter 21

1) There was another gathering in the market place- significant becasue this happened in the beginning of the story too

2) The purposes of the gatherings were different- significant because anytime the author makes a difference in Shakespeare, there's a reason

3) The first time the gathering was for hester's punishment but this time it was for the new governor.

4) Hester kept zoning out and imagining her not being isolated anymore.

5) One of the crew memebers casually mentioned that Chillingworth was also going to be attending.

6) Hester looked over and saw Chillingworth smirking at her.

Chapter 21

1. Are Hester and Dimmesdale even allowed to leave? Is what they're doing legal?
2. Pg 208. Its the election sermon day. Pearl is looking at how clean and well groomed the townspeople are.
3. The scene is compared to a similar scene in Old England. Here, there are no jesters or street entertainment of any kind. It shows how uptight the Puritans are.
4. The Indians are present. Why are they always hanging around the town?
5. The mariners from the Spanish Main, instead of the Indians, are described as being the most savage, rough people on the scene.
6. Chillingworth is coming to England with them on the same ship.

Chapter 20

1. A lot has changed for Dimmesdale, he can now go into town and he feels much better about himself. His fortunes have changed now that he and Hester were getting back together.

2. Hester and Dimmesdale are taking a boat to Europe because Hester knows the crew of a ship that can take them.

3. Dimmesdale starts realizing that everything has changed including himself.

4. Everywhere Dimmesdale goes, he has the urge to tell everyone that he is not the man they think he is.

5. He starts to ignore people because he doesn't want to corrupt them.

6. Dimmesdale tells Chilingworth he doesn't need him anymore, and Chillingworth thinks it is because Dimmesdale knows who he is.

Chapter 21

1. There is another gathering in the market place but it has nothing to do with Hester, it is to welcome the new governor.

2. Pearl asks Hester is Dimmesdale will hold her hand like he does in the forest.

3. Hester isn't really paying attention, instead she is imagining herself escaping the last 7 years and having a new life.

4. Chillingworth is supposed to be joining Hester and Dimmesdale on the ship because it needs a doctor.

5. This seems like Chillingworths own plan because he is the one who told the captain that he will be joining them.

6. Hester knows this is Chilingworths plan because when she looks at him in the marketplace right after hearing the news, he is smiling at her.

2. Hester becomes close with crew of ship and finds out the next trip to Europe
3. They plan to get a board the ship to go back to Europe in 4 days
4. Dimesdale feels like a new person. And that he left the old on behind in the forest.
5. Dimmesdale tells Chillingworth he has no more need for him.
6. Chillingworth fears Dimmesdale knows the truth.

1. Public gathering in the marketplace at the end in daylight! (symbol)
2. It’s a holiday and Dimmesdale has written a great sermon for it.
3. Pearl again asks her mother if Dimmesdale will hold her hand in public at the marketplace.
4. Hester thinks about how her years in isolation are over when she goes back to Europe.
5. The captain tells Hester that Chillingworth will be joining them on there voyage because they need a doc and he told the captain he was part of Hesters party.
6. When Hester looks up in the marketplace she sees Chillingworth smirking at her, like he did the last time she was there 7 years ago.

Page 197)
1)It's ironic that he would want to give the gov.'s speech to 'leave no business unfinished' and he's leaving for good the day after. He's practically leaving his entire job unfinished.

2)Dimmesdale feels good now that all three are together. Maybe now he won't be so ill all the time? I don't know, Pearl wasn't so accepting of him back in the forest.

3)The old lady reminiscing on her family and her husband now dead.. Gets Dimmesdale thinking about what he's done and what he's doing.

1) There is another gathering at the market, the third one. There was one in the beginning, middle, and end. We mentioned how important this was a few times in class.

2) Hester dreams of getting away and Pearl betrays all of Hester's emotions.

3) Pearl asks if Dimmesdale is going to be there with the hand over his heart.

4) Hester says that Pearl doesn't understand, and even though she's a child I kind of think that Pearl understands a little more then her mom knows.

5) A civilian randomly mentioned that Chillingworth was going to be there. He was there for the other two market meetings as well.

6) Hester could see Chillingworth standing there and smirking at her. He knows something, for sure.

-Dimmesdale is running through the forest with no problems. its like hes not even sick anymore.
-everything Dimmesdale is seeing on the way back to town is looking strange
-nothing he is seeing has changed its him who is different
-all this transformation is because of Hester
-when Dimmesdale is experiencing all the temptation the witch lady mistress Hibbins walks by and smiles at him
-she thinks hes gone into the forrest to do whitchy things like her
ch 21
-they show up to the market and Pearl is looking real fresh
-infact she is so fresh that its hard to believe shes Hesters daughter
-this freshness represents Pearls personality/inner self
-Hesters got this grey robe thing going and its not flattering
-her dull dress is showing how the scarlet letter has changed her from her old beauty
-Hester is pumped to get away until she finds out Chillingwroth is coming too

1)Dimmesdale leaves Hester and Pearl but looks back while walking away- signifying he is second guessing his choice of leaving so soon.

2)Dimmesdale asks about the departure of the the ship & when finds out that it is four days from now he says it is "most unfortunate"- perhaps he wanted to board the ship.

3) Dimmesdale wanted to end his career by preaching at the governor's inauguration.

4) He is thinking about his congregation; wondering if it was all a dream.

5)Dimmesdale won a young woman to God during his vigil sermon- Hawthorne is showing that even people with sin in their hearts can do good.

6) Chillingworth wonders if Dimmesdale knows that he is aware of his secret.

Chapter 21
1)All the townspeople are gathered at the election for a new governor

2)This scene is ironic and familar because it is set as the same setting as the book first starts out.

3)Pearl wants Dimmesdale to hold her hand, but Dimmesdale doesn’t really want the public to see him doing this.

4)Hester wants a new life and to not feel lonely- she is trying to imagine her new life with her daughter and Dimmesdale.

5)A sailor tells Hester that the doctor (Chillingworth) will be going with them.

6)Chillingworth exchanges a look with Hester, smiling. This shows that he isn’t going to let them escape. Hesters vision of a new life of not hiding is shattered

1. Dim is in disbeleif that he is actually going to Europe.
2. Hester is going out of her way to get a spot on the vessel by getting familar with the crew
3. Dim feels everything is strange and not familiar and people will judge him
4.Dim is mentally unstable and has the urge to say rude statements to random people
5.Dim says he doesnt need the drugs anymore
6. He is scared to ask Chillings if he know who he actually is

Finds out that Chillingworth is going to be there.

Hester looked over and saw Chillingworth smirking at her.

1.Dimmesdale is not as sick mentally or physically after deciding to sneak off to Europe with Hester and Pearl.
2.Dimmesdale thinks everything else around him has changed, but really it is just his outlook.
3.Chillingworth is suspicious that Dimmesdale knows who he is, but doesn't know how to find out.

1. There is a gathering to announce the new governor.
2. Peral wonders if Dimmesdale will tell the public that he is the one that is Pearl's father.
3. Chillingworth seems to be planning something evil, you can tell by the way he smirks at Hester.

2. Dimms passes two women on his way throughout the town
3. He ignores the young one because he doesnt want to contaminate her heart with one of his filthy statements he might blurt out
4. Dimms runs into the Misstress Hibbins and it bothers him because he thinks that the Devil has something to do with her
5. Dimms doesnt need Chillingworths help anymore.
6. He begins to write his sermon that he will have to say to everyone on Election Day

3. Hester can only picture and think about their get-away to Europe
4. Hester's thoughts are interrupted when she hears that Chillingworth will be attending on the ship
5. Chillgworth states that he can help on the ship because he is a docter
6. Hester looking up discovers and realizes that Chillingworth is glaring at her with an evil look
