VMAs

Yesterday was 2010 MTV music Video Awards. http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/2010/. Did you watch it? Why or why not? What did you think of this anniversary show? Do you like its format and performances? Why or why not? Do you agree with the nominees and winners? If not, who should have been picked for each category? Should there be other musical categories? If so, which ones?

Regarding the VMA's,i personally did not watch it lastnight due to the fact that the last episode of True Blood was on.However, something must be said about music today. Music isnt the same as it used to be. Since the synthesizer has been introduced anybody can become famous, music doesnt have any meaning anymore it is just catchy beats. Music is supposed to express emotions not to make money.

Last night I did indeed watch the VMAs. The show was pretty good but didn't think Justin Bieber should have won best new artist. He shouldn't have won because I don’t think he's a good singer and there were better choices that could have, and should have won. Kesha would have been a better choice for the winner of the best new artist because her songs are fun to sing and dance along with unlike Justin Bieber whose songs bore me.

While I am not particularly interested in the Video Music Awards themselves, I did tune in to MTV for a little to see if the ever growing Kanye West and Taylor Swift argument had any interesting devolpments. . Taylor and Kanye have been back forth since last years VMA's. I find it kind of sad that I care more about the arguments between celebritys on MTV is more intersesting then the music itself that MTV is playing. As soon as I found out that nothing had happened between Taylor and Kanye, I immediatly changed the channel. MTV can't hold my attention anymore because it is more about the stars themselves and less about the music

Kimberly Rotter said...

Ian, what is the argument between Taylor and Kanye? Why did it interest you?

Unknown said...

I did not watch the VMAS last night because I was watching Lord of The Rings and listening to actual music. There may have been some good music on the show but I would not know because I did not bother to watch it. From what I hear on the radio and the feedback from people in school today most of it would not have tickled my fancy.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Jamie, so, you like no current music? What is your favorite band? Type of music? Why?

I watched the vmas last night and my most favorite thing of the night was Taylor Swift's and Kanye West's performances. The two songs went hand in had with Taylor forgiving Kanye for what he did the year before and also explaining how much she was hurt by the selfish actions he took. Kanye,at the end of the night, gave a very intersering performance that said he was a jerk and he knows it and thats why he ran away hence the song Name "Runaway". One of the things that made it night funny was that people kept bringing up what Kanye did the year before staring with Chelsea Handler, the host, saying it was time to adress the "big black elephant in the room". This broke the ice for people to start laughing at the situation and forgiving and maybe forgetting his mistakes.

Lady Gagan is a very talented perfomer and aritist in almost everthing that she does. I thought that she was worthy of winning the many awards that she did because they were well done but I did't think "Bad Romance" was as good as it was made out to be. Sure the song was catchy, but I belive that there were more deserving videos that were differnt, but not just for the sake of being different. Also Lady Gaga probably won that many awards probably because there are not very many artists in the running. If there were more than the same 5 people nominated the results might have turned out differently.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Mslatts46,
What is actual music anyway???? Explain.

Unknown said...

Ian, MTV can’t hold my attention anymore either and it’s not just because of the bad music always playing but also because all they ever play is reality shows. It is no longer music television it is reality television, it should be called RTV

Unknown said...

I would have to agree with the Big J aka Jamie.

Anonymous said...

The fight between Taylor Swift and Kanye started last year when Taylor Swift won best video for a female artist. Soon after Taylor was given the award Kanye came onto the stage and said that Beyonce should have won the award Taylor Swift was given, starting the whole argument between them. I jsut think that the whole arugment is kind of funny so it actually gave me a reason to watch MTV which is pretty bad.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Kate,
So you think more nominees would improve the show? Also, what exactly are your critiques of "Bad Romance."

Kimberly Rotter said...

Emily and Ian,
I agree about the lack of music on MTV. When I was younger, it was mostly music with a couple of sitcoms interwoven into the lineup. But, their new reality shows seem so popular. Look at Jersey Shore for instance. So maybe its us the views fault for the changed lineup/focus of MTV.

Unknown said...

I didn't watch the VMA's due to the fact that I had no clue it was on and I was watching The X-Files. I wouldn't have been interested anyway. Music today is infused with so much bubblegum garbage and voice changers that it's hard to tell who is truly talented, and not just famous for good looks. I like Lady Gaga but think that Madonna has already accomplished what she's trying to portray herself as. Also, I think that people who are actually musically inclined would win a Grammy.

Anonymous said...

I, also, did not tune into the VMAs last night. I was too busy, like mslatts46, listening to music with actual substance, created by musicians that actually know how to construct a song. I myself am a musician, and I know that a lot goes into writing a song. I challenge you, the people who worship the music artists of today to sit down and listen to a Led Zeppelin ablum, I personally suggest 3 or 4, or a Stevie Ray Vaughn ablum, the music artists I worship. And don't just listen to the lyrics, listen to the music, the guitar riffs, the bass, the drum line and then compare it to a Taylor Swift song, who though she does know how to write music, hasn't quite reached the level of someone like Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats or George Winston the classical pianist. Any one who knows basic music theory can write a catchy song, but to really know the instruments you play and what it takes to come up with a melody or a rhythm that can actually go some where is another thing.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Val,

So you think Lady Gaga has not done anything original? At all? I wonder if you will think highly about the Grammy's when, I think, Lady Gaga wins one.

Unknown said...

When the VMAs started last night, I thought it was going to be really good because Eminem started the show and I thought he did really good, but then when Rhianna came on I was surprised because she didnt sound very good live. I was excited to see how Chelsea Handler would make the VMA's funny but some of her jokes were not very funny. It seemed like she was trying to hard. Even though it must be hard hosting such a big event in front of so many people, she should have relaxed a little. I was very excited when Eminem won two awards, but i wish he could have been there to accept them. Personally i think Lady Gaga deserved every award that she recieved because she is a great artist and she cares alot about her fans.

Unknown said...

Ms. Rotter. I actually am a huge fan of Lady Gaga's music, and if she wins a Grammy, great. I also have no problem with her image (her strange outfits, hairstyles, etc.,). I just think that it has all been done before.

Katie said...

Lastnight, I made an attempt to watch the VMA's but I was distracted by playing BrickBreaker and flipping channels. When I was actually paying attention to the show, I saw Justin Bieber lipsyncing and drop his drumstick while trying to be a drummer. He also won the overall best video, which was well underserved. Eminem had a great performance and deserved to win his two awards. Lady Gaga seemed a little over-dramatic when she cried every time they announced that she had won an award. Overall, the VMA's were pretty dissapointing. I exected a lot more excitement and for Nicki Minaj to win some awards, or atleast someone different then the same few people for everything.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Anonymous,
I think your make an unfair comparison. While you are correct to say that Led Zeppelin is deeper than T. Swift, is it fair to say the Monkees, a band around the same time as Led Zepplin, is deeper. You compared pop, a genre that is not so deep but tries to be catchy, to another deeper genre. Let's make a fairer comparison. Eminem to Led Zeppelin....

Last night as i ate dinner and did my homework after cheerleading I enjoyed a wonderful preformance by Rizzobrooke's favorite singer. Eminem rocked the VMA's with his song Not Afraid. When Rihanna came out to acompany him in their hit Love the Way You Lie everything went down hill from there. Its not the song i don't like it was Rihanna. Usually I like hearing her perform but last night she didn't do a good job. I was dissapointed overall with the VMAs because usually every year they are interesting and something dramatic happens but this year they were boring and the same people kept getting nominated just like KATIE said. I think Lady Gaga is a interesting singer and she has done very well over the past year and deserved the awards she got but if there were more options of people to vote for maybe she wouldn't of won so many of the awards given out.

Unknown said...

Every year I watch the VMAs becuase I always enjoys seeing what every celebrity is wearing and the performances on the show. This anniversary show was pretty good but I found it to be no more special then the past years. The stage was awesome which made it enjoyable to watch with the lighting on the floor. Eminem is a great performer but the opening act is usually a spectacular dancing performance which I was disappointed about. I think that Eminem shouldve been an act later on in the show. I agree with most of the nominees and winners except Justin Bieber winning the best new artist, others may think differently but he is just not my type of music to listen to. I would have preferred to see Nicki Minaj to be the winner of best new artist becuase I ejoy her music more then Justin Bieber's.

Anonymous said...

I didnt watch the VMA's cause i didnt know they were on and i was sleeping but i dont think i would of watch it anyway.Nothing on that channel interests me at all.

Unknown said...

Last night I did watch the VMA's because every year something interesting usually happens. Chelsea Handler got on my nerves because she tried to be funny, but she just made dumb comments sometimes. Lady Gaga's outfits were ridiculous as usual and so was Rihanna's when she performed with Eminem. Eminem was amazing and he deserved to win the two awards he recieved. I'm glad that Justin Bieber won the best overall video because I love him, but I was dissappointed that he lipsynced the whole time during his performance. The VMA's weren't as good as I thought they'd be because all of the same people were nominated each time.

Unknown said...

I did watch some of the VMAs last night. Chelsea Handler was the host of the event and I thought she did an okay job at it. Her jokes were usually funny and offensive as usual, but sometimes she took it to the next level where it was just too much. Go figure Eminem got an award, his new music is great and his videos are well created and he did in fact deserve the award(s) considering all the hard work he put into his latest album. Although the radio killed his music due to constantly over playing. Lady Gaga of course recieved multiple awards and her outfit was pretty vivid and wild. Yes, she made her signature statment but it was too much for me, especially her alien like stilettos. Over all most of the preformances were great. Honestly, I think that the artists that can truely sing and preform on stage should, and the ones that can not, shouldn't. Only true talent belongs on stage/ live television.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Brooke,

Why did Chelsea fall flat as host? What were some of her jokes that you didn't find funny?

Kimberly Rotter said...

Val,
Hasn't everything been done before? Isn't everything just repackaged? Is any musician truly original?

Kimberly Rotter said...

Who is Nicki Minaj? Why do you like her?

Kimberly Rotter said...

Samantha,
How would you improve the show then?

Kimberly Rotter said...

Briana,
I am so sad to hear that Rihanna's performance was disappointing because I love that song with Eminmem. What was it you did not like about Rihanna's performance?

Katie said...

Nicki Minaj is probably the greatest female rapper alive. Her voice and style makes her different then other female rappers.

Unknown said...

I did watch the VMAS last night. I tuned in mostly because Chelsea Handler was the host and Drake was performing. Did anyone else find it hilarious when Justin Beiber failed at playing the drums? His performance was terribly lip-synced followed by bad dancing. I don’t think he deserved the award for Best New Artist. I would have rather seen it go to Nicki Minaj or even Ke$ha. Personally I thought the best part of the show was Drake’s performance with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz. He should have been able to perform more songs because he is amazing. I found it annoying to see all the same artists nominated for pretty much every award. Overall, Lady Gaga won too many awards and the VMAS are overrated.

Stephanie said...

When the VMAs were on, I did not watch it, because to be honest I did not even know it was on. Although by looking at the awards and who won them, I do not agree with some of the choices made. Justin Bieber should not have won best new artist, because in my opinion he does not have that great of a voice. I have to say, I am not surprised with all the awards that Lady Gaga received. She is a popular artist with an odd sense of style. But that is what makes her stand from the crowd. Even though I do not agree with her fashion sense, Which is odd in my opinion. For example, the outfits that she wore to the VMAs. An Alexander McQueen, complete with lobster claw heels and a headdress. A meat dress, not made of real meat though, and finally a black Armani dress that was so heavy, that she needed help getting up from her seat to receive her award.

I myself did not watch the VMAs, I didn't even know about them until today, but I heard alot of people complaining about Justin Bieber lipsyncing and to that I say well of course because Justin Bieber is voiced by a 12 year old girl, she just isn't the one on stage because her hair isn't swooshy enough.

Unknown said...

I agree with what Ms. Rotter said earlier about no music or style being truly original, in response to what I said about Lady Gaga. My mom says that she sounds alot like the club music she used to listen to in the 80's. I applaud Lady Gaga for emulating such a great period in music history.

Stephanie said...

Ms.Rotter,
I haven't seen what she wore to the yankee's game. But I think that Lady Gaga trys to hard to stand out and be diffrent. Her music is not that bad though. When she first discovered, her clothes were pretty normal for music videos and such. But it seemed the higher she grew in her career, the weirder her outfits seemed to grow. In the 2009 VMAs she wore the kermit the frog outfit. That was pretty strange in my opinion.

Sam said...

I didn't watch the VMAs, nor did I have any intentions of doing so. The VMA's seem pointless to me, especially since I don't like pop music to begin with. It's all the same.. Verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus-chorus. Every single pop song is the same.

I do not believe Lady Gaga is a good artist. The only thing unique about her is her style of clothing. But her songs are all the same as every other pop artist. I don't think she should have won best video for "Bad Romance," because the song is no different then any other and because the video doesn't make much sense.

I just got home from one of the most brutal bus rides of my life and have decided to change my earlier opinion about the VMAS. For 40 minutes I sat infront of three freshman with my ears plugged (which did not help much)because they insisted on singing very badly to songs like My Humps, Birthday Sex and multiple Miley Cirus songs. Which might I add are songs that are already not to my liking and adding the three of their voices made it even worse. So after these 40 minutes of terror is when I began to rethink my positioning on the VMAS. I am still not terribly interested in wacthing them but have come to the conclusion that it is not the worst music I could be listening to.

I watched the VMAs and i thought it was terrible. I thought that everyone sounded bad live. I also thought Chelsea Handler was not really that funny. In overall i was disappointed in this years video music awards.

meghan said...

Ms.Rotter,
Well what I meant by actual music was the music I listen to. I know a lot of people like the music on the VMAS and dont know any of the stuff I listen to but I really think that what i listen to is more meaningfull and is good music. for example: "Roll away your stone I will roll away mine
Together we can see what we will find
Don't leave me alone at this time
For I am afraid of what I will discover inside

You told me that I wouldn't find a home
Beneath the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal
And all the while my character it steals

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think
Yet it dominates the things I see

It seems that all my bridges have been burned
But you say "That's exactly how this grace thing works"
It's not the long walk home that will change this heart
But the welcome I receive with every start

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think
And yet it dominates the things I see
Darkness is a harsh term don't you think
And yet it dominates the things I see

Stars hide your fires
For these here are my desires
And I won't give them up to you this time around
And so I will be found
With my stake stuck in the ground
Marking the territory of this newly impassioned soul

And you, you've gone too far this time
You have neither reason nor rhyme
With which to take this soul that is so rightfully mine " - Roll Away Your Stone by Mumford & Sons

Unknown said...

Of course I watched the VMAs last night. I watched mostly for Eminem's performance and to watch Justin Bieber make a fool of himself on stage. I did not watch much of the VMAs because i feel that it is completely unfair. Lady Gaga won way too many awards and her music isn't even good. I think there needs to be more artists involved just to spice it up a bit. It would have also been a lot better if Lil Wayne could have been there.

Anonymous said...

Meghan,
I agree Mumford & Sons's songs are great.

But..
I still have to rep YOUNG MONEY.

Anonymous said...

Bad romance is a good song for the first 10 times then it just gets so annoying. She's a talented person but defiantly if there had been more artist nominated the results would have been different. I also think people forget that the vmas are about the videos and not the songs themselves so opitions on the song and the video can be completely different and that is why the results are skewed most of the time.

Anonymous said...

I was fully aware that the VMA's were on last night, but I was very uninterested in watching it, especially because there is no varitey in music style. It's all the same mainstream music that you hear on the radio every single day. I tend to think that I listen to really good music. I'm the kind of person who goes to local or underground shows to check out new, real talent.

As an examlpe, Lady Gaga is not new, real talent. Yes, I agree her songs are catchy, but that doesn't make her a talented singer/songwriter. Coming up with a few lines for a song that rhyme does not make you a talented artist, neither does dressing up in crazy outfits that scream for attention.

Real, talented musicians have an appreciation for music, and a passion that never dies.

Unknown said...

The show would have been better if they had more artists perform like they usually do each year. Also the same artists shouldn't have been nominated for the same song every time because it got boring after awhile, for example Lady Gaga's Bad Romance won a lot of awards.

Anonymous said...

I did not watch MTV's VMAS. All I heard that Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber got a lot of awards. Maybe Lady Gaga deserved it, but I don't get how Justin Bieber did. He sounds like a girl, and I don't think I'll ever understand why people like him.

Unknown said...

I liked the VMA's I especially liked Nicki Minaj <3. I do not think justin beiber should have won new artists. I also feel that lady gaga sucks and should not have won.

Unknown said...

Okay, I didn't watch the VMAs. I don't like recent music. It's just kinda dumb, no offense to people that do listen to it. Maybe Lady Gaga sis deserve awards, but no Justin Bieber. He just sounds to much like a girl. And couldn't they just spread out the awards a little bit? I'm sure they could've spread out the awards.

Anonymous said...

i think lady gaga is a complete media suck up. She'll do anything to be in the spot light because she is always wanting to be in the latest issue. your 32 years old lady its it to grow up and be mature.

Unknown said...

I didn't watch the VMAs because I had work. I saw the ending with Kanye West and Lady GaGa winning video of the year. In the morning I listened to Preston and Steve and heard that Lady GaGa won most of the awards. I think that she shouldn't have won so many awards because she in general is a horrible artist. Justin Bieber wont best new artist and he shouldn't have because he's just like all the other little boy artist who all sound the same, overrated, and wont even be around a year from now. It seems like all the MTV award shows like the movie award and the video music awards there is no point to even watching because it always is just person or group winning everything. Movie Awards, Twilight. The music awards this year, Lady GaGa. It makes it pointless to even watch. For me it just makes it not entertaining. Also the fact that MTV doesn't even play music videos anymore, so you really don't know what you have to vote for.

Anonymous said...

I did watch a little of the VMA'S. For the most part i did enjoy watching it. the show had some major downfalls. lady gaga won way to many awards. in my eyes her music is overrated n doesnt have the right to be played on the radio. all the performances were good i enjoyed most of them. kanye west had the best performance

eric gladstone said...

no one cares too much if zpolatta was dissapointed about the vma's. and i did not watch them but i looked some info up about them and i thought lady gaga's "meat dress" was cool and weird at the same time and heard she won 8 awards. and read that justin beiber did well too. but lady gaga has alot of good songs and alot of different styles of clothing that is more like costumes. and thats about all i have to say. i dont really know what to say really.

Kimberly Rotter said...

So,
It seems that there is a consensus that you guys don't like the award winners. You guys don't seem to like what is "popular" music. So, what are you guys listening to? What music/songs/musicians should we study in our poetry unit?

Unknown said...

The show would have been better if they let Kanye on the stage more. That got so much attention so if you do it again there will be alot of people just watching to see hoe Kanye will make a joke of himself. At the VMAs Kanye performed a song called "Let’s Have a Toast for the Douchebags." That was my favorite performence of the night.

Anonymous said...

Honestly I have no interests in the VMA's. From what I heard from friends Gaga won alot of awards and have to disagree on that! Why do people like her?

Unknown said...

I listen to good music like Rap. Hood Music. Meek Millz

Unknown said...

I watched the VMA's for a little while and heard how many nominations Lady Gaga had gotten for many different things and she probably should have. I think there should have been more newer artists that got nominated for those but they thought Lady Gaga was better. Lady Gaga is a good singer but there are singers that are just as good as her and maybe even better. I didn't really like this years format so i stopped watching it half way through the show. But the performances i had watched were good.

Unknown said...

regarding the VMA's, i only was able to watch a little bit of them before getting bored. The VMA's are normaly alot more intresting, it normally involves alot more performances. Of what i did see i was able to see Ushers performance of OMG and it was really good. He used alot effects to create a better performance. As to Justin Biber he was ok, I cant say i like him as a person but his songs have a catchy beat. but for a 16yr old who everyone swears is 12 he has no clue about love, which happenes to be what all his songs are about.

Kimberly Rotter said...

So,

More Kanye? Should MTV have played more to the spectacle of the fights of celebrities, or try to make it classier like the Grammy’s?

I only watched a little bit of the VMAs but I think Lady Gaga is boring and her stuff rlly isnt anything new, she shouldn't have won anything shes a terrible artist. I loved the preformance of love the way you lie wit Eminem and Rhianna i love that song and nothing can make me change my opinion on that song.

I think the MTV VMA’s are just ridiculous now. There’s such a broad band of music that the awards don’t even recognize. The metal genre for instance is a big, and still growing, genre that is almost shunned by most people. Whether people want to admit it or not, there’s a lot of talent in metal music, but the VMA’s only concern themselves with Pop music, pop rock, and rap. I just think the VMA’s should expand the variety of genres that are presented each year. Even if that means making new awards.

The only reason the same people always win and nothing new ever has a chance to win is because radio only plays the same mainstream music over and over again because that is what's in, that's what every single person is into just because it's popular. There is always good new music coming out but you'd never know it. If people want a better award shows maybe radio and MTV should play more variety, new music, and not the same like 6 songs all day long.

I agree with Barry, there are many bands that aren't recognized for their styles of music and they should make awards for their types of music. The VMA's only recognize pop, hip hop, and rap.

The Jeffersons" was perhaps the most-successful spinoff series to "All in the Family." George Jefferson was the black version of Archie Bunker in many respects, both were loud-mouthed, opinionated and set in their bigoted ways. By 1975, Jefferson's fledging dry-cleaning business, Jefferson Cleaners, had successfully grown into a small chain; his newfound wealth led to moving his family to a "deluxe apartment in the sky" in Manhattan. His family included his wife, Louise, a level-headed and open-minded woman who often had to scold George when his mouth got him into trouble; and Lionel, an engineering major at a local college. He especially disliked Tom and Helen Willis, a mixed couple (he was white, she was black) whose daughter, Jenny, was dating and later married Lionel; Florence, his sharp-tongued maid; and Harry Bentley, the esoteric Englishman who lived next door. George often flaunted his wealth and displayed rude, arrogant, bigoted behavior; however, he often found that money didn't open every door or win him favor with everyone. In later years, George and Louise became grandparents (welcoming an adorable little girl, Jessica); and Lionel and Jenny found work he as an electrical engineer, she as a fashion designer. However, Lionel and Jenny's marriage soon began to crumble. Meanwhile, as Jefferson Cleaners continued to expand, George continually had to deal with competing dry-cleaning franchises, who sought to put George out of business. In the final season, George and Tom formed a partnership and purchased Charlie's Bar, their favorite hangout.

this show should have won an award. end of story

Last night the VMA awards captured the eyes of hundreds of teenagers and adults alike all across the country. For the time it was on, people across the United States were glued to their televisions and watching their favorite artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Eminem strut across the stage and claim their awards. These awards mark them as great artists, inspiring to their audiances, and brilliant song writters when really none of this is true for the most part.

One artist in particular took home eight titles; including best collaboration, best collaboration video, and video of the year. This is Lady Gaga, who's awkwardly outgoing personality as well as an eye for disgustingly outrageous clothing has pushed her to the top of the pop charts. Her style of music, though, is nothing new. Songs about finding love and partying follow a long line of artists in the pop genre that have expressed these desires. If a person looked closely enough at her lyrics, they're all the same as any other pop song that has just been worded differently. Also, her songs follow the same tedious pattern of "verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus-chorus" that has haunted the world of music for decades. In this point in time it is unoriginal and not very creative at all. It's a pain to listen to. Just as people are sick and tired of listening to the depressing "life sucks" punk rock and alternative songs, it is absolutley horrible to listen to the same "Oh, I love you and look how awesome I am!" lyrics that mark the pop genre. Her songs do not deserve to be recognized for anything.

Winning the award for best new artist Justin Bieber, the 16 year old with a high pitched voice and the looks of a 12 year old, does not deserve to be recognized. His songs are no different then any other pop artist and in a year or two he won't be able to hit those high notes. Then, he'll be lip synching and his songs will fall upon deaf ears. Though there was one artist in particular who does deserve to be recognized- Eminem. Though rap isn't real music at all and it is almost painfull to listen to, most of his lyrics come from the heart and show the struggle of human life. They are songs that the ordinary person can understand and relate to, and they follow an original pattern. Still, the VMA's remain a worthless display of unoriginal artists with nothing more then cool hair.

ArchToAchilles,

I think it is too harsh of a criticism to say that all music is copycat because most Arts are copycats in some way. Most movies are based on Shakespearean plays, most fashions are just revised from clothes 20 years ago, and I could go on. Harold Bloom, a noted literary critic, believes that all art MUST repond to earlier creations. People cannot create in isolation; all art must repond.

On another note, I think your criticism of the music on MTV is valid because MTV is only concerned with popular music. And just like in every era, the popular stuff is cliche. It is never different because it must pander to the greatest amounts of taste.

But, real music is out there. I disagree with your comment that "Though rap isn't real music at all and it is almost painfull to listen to". I believe rap music is one of the saving graces to the commercialization of music. What does everyone else think?

Anonymous said...

Although I would like a greater variety in music genres, played on the radio by bands who actually take time and think about the music, that might not be the best idea. It seems to me that the more underground music is the better music because there's not that much pressure from the audience. I've have been to alot of underground shows, and truth be told, they are alot better, and more personal than the mainstream ones I've been to.

Pilot said...

Mrs. Rotter,
I did not mean to say that all pop music artists are all copycats, it's just that there's never anything new in pop. They all sing about the same stuff in the same way, not so much they copy off of eachother it's just that no one's really coming up with anything new.

I do not agree that rap is real music, but I don't mean to make it sound so harsh. I understand that there are people out there who like rap a lot, but to me isn't isn't really music. To me, all they're doing is talking fast at a certain beat. It just doesn't seem very creative.

On a lighter note, I agree that all the popular stuff is cliche. Also, themain reason why I don't like MTV is because they're only concered with popular music and do not appeal to all tastes.

Pilot said...

Anna, I agree with you. I listen to a lot of rock and screamo, and in my opinion the bands that aren't well known are the best. I can relate to the lesser known ones more.

Stefi said...

I did not watch the VMA's the other night. Some years I would watch it however, it got more boring to me and I feel that the VMA's don't display all types of music. The VMA's mostly portray rap, hip hop, and pop music. Although I enjoy these types of music, there are also other types of music that I think have a lot of meaning and I find interesting. It isn't fair to just have certain artists and types of music to be rewarded when there are others who have just as much or even more talent. It isn't fair to those artists and I feel that the VMA's should have a wider variety of music for their show and many more people would become interested.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Arch,

I think that is what people like about pop, the familarity. Think about the old pop songs: "I just want to hold your hand", "Hit the Road Jack", etc, songs that express happiness on love, heartache over a breakup. Pop seems to express over and over common human emotions, so while they may seem redundant, I think people find comfort in their repetitive nature.

Stephanie said...

ArchToAchilles, I have to disagree with you when you say that some of the winners of awards aren't inspiring. I have to say that perhaps in your opinion that these musicians are not inspiring, but to other people they are. I think your critic is slightly harsh. On another note, about Lady Gaga and her "disgustingly outrageous clothing" I would have to disagree at some parts. Yes, alot of her clothes were bad, really bad and yes she likes to try and stand out from the crowd. But she is not all bad, she has good aspects in her also. Her songs on the other hand, are not as bad as you put them to be. You can tell that by how many fans that she has.

I think you are being to critical when you say that every artist has the same type of songs, each artist is unique in there own way. And any song, once you break it down into pieces, they are all basically the same. Yet unique to that personal artist. Although I do agree with you on how Justin Bieber should not have one any awards, he has the voice of a girl and looks like a little kid. He should have waited some time before jumping into a singing career.

I have to disagree once again on how you stated that rap was not music. It is music, just a diffrent genre. Rap music usually comes from the heart, and there is a meaning behind the words that they are singing about.

Pilot said...

Stephanie,
I never said that all music is the same, that every artist has the same songs. I said every pop artist does, and I stand firmly to my opinion. There's never anything new in pop music and I do not find many of the pop artists inspiring. Also you can't judge an artist's music by how many fans they have. In my opinion, none of her music is inspiring and it is my strong opinion that there is nothing appealing about Lady Gaga's songs.

Once again, I did not say that every artist has the same typ eof song, I said only pop artists are this way. But yeah.. I think Justin Bieber could have waited a year or two for his voice to go down before starting a career so that his voice wouldn't go down right in the middle of it.

I do not feel that rap is real music, but I do agree that a lot of it does come from the heart.

Kimberly Rotter said...

Random thought:

Is what happening to Justin B child abuse? Works hours past what the laws state, seems to be exploited, or is he a prodigy that should be heard?

meghan said...

The music in which I partake is mostly made up of artist who are often unheard of or are just not that popular and I seem to enjoy them more. When they become more popular I feel as though it takes some of the edge away. I dont know why exactly but it really rocks my boat when a song I love and have been listening to for a long time is suddenly popular and everyone knows it. Maybe it's because I think people don't really take the time to understand its meaning and don't appreciate the talent that does into it. But anywho I agree with anna.

Kimberly Rotter said...

meghan,

Your just a snob, j/k. Actually, I felt the same way as you at your age. I felt that people didn't get the importance of the music. Now I am glad when it happens because I want people to have access to good music.

justin beiber is not prodigy that should be heard.the only reason he is popular is because for some reason little girls are in love with him.

Stephanie said...

ArchToAchilles, I am not trying to cut down your opinion, everyone is entilted to their own. What I mean is that sometimes you have to think more about it. Not all pop artists are bad singers, and I think how many fans an artist has some point to an artists music. Justin Bieber has fans that are around the age of 12. That's where most of his music appeals to. Even though I have to say, either way if you listen to his songs. They are horrible.

Regarding the Jersey Shore- Come on guys, really? They're just.. Plain.. Dumb. A good example of this would be 'snooki' on Oprah, telling italian pride groups to essentially 'piss off' for getting 'on her case' about using the term guido so frequently. I don't know about you, but I'd be a little pissed if there were a bunch of 19-30 year old fist-pumpers telling me to stop getting so uppity about them calling themselves 'micks'.

I did watch the VMAs last night. I have been watching the VMAs for 2 years. I thought the VMAs were not as good as they have been in the past. When I found out that Justin Beiber won the award for new artist I was pretty mad about that. I personally thought Kesha should have won because her songs are fun to sing along with and also fun to dance along with also. Justin Beiber songs are boring. I feel he shoud not be on the VMAs because he is young and many of his fans are young and the VMAs are for more like older teenagers so i do not know why Justin Beiber was on the VMAs. I think Justin Beiber should be on the kids choice awards because most people who watching Nickeloden are young kids so I think Justin being on the kids choice awards would be better. I enjoyed Taylor Swifts perfromance. Taylor is one of my favorite artists.

Ms.Rotter, I agree that Eminem is a amazing singer and song writer. His songs have so many emotions and feelings blead into them that you can almost understand how he feels in many ways. I would accept the challenge of comparing Led Zeppelin to Eminem, but alas, I cannot thoroughly make a comparison between the two. Why? Because the most I have ever heard of any of his music was maybe a couple thirty second snippets. This is because upon being assulted by what it is that he calls music, my ears just about bled, and I do believe that if I hadn't made sure that the person who had so foolishly put the "music" on made it go away, that I would have suffered massive head trauma and would not be hear to voice my harsh opinions with you today. And wouldn't that be a shame. But moving forward, my comparison of Led Zeppelin (as well as other bands) to current pop music, while unfair, was more realistic than comparing them to Eminem in the light I was attempting to shine upon the subject. My comparison of Zeppelin to Taylor Swift and the other artists of today's pop scene was a comparison between music, not lyrics. Don't get me wrong, millionaire rock stars telling everyone not to be materialistic is really deep and all, but when I listen to Zeppelin, lyrics aren't what I think about. It's the actual music, the actual construction of notes and melodies and so forth that I'm talking about. Artists like Swift actually have comprehension of that, which is why I am able to make that comparison. But if Eminem is still anything like what was forced upon me, I can make no comparison because you don't have to be an actual musician to produce that.
