Best Movies

I have enjoyed the conversations we have had thus far; many of you have made thought-provoking comments, provided clever insights, started interesting tangents, or have inserted humor. Bravo, keep it up!

Next topic: movies. They have the ability to move us, enlighten us, or simply humor us. Whatever the reason we watch them constantly, but we all have favorites. Access the follow sight which lists its top 100 movies of all time:

http://www.filmsite.org/mrshowbz.html.

Do you agree with this list? Why or why not? What would your top 3 movies be of all time? Why? What do you love about movies? Do you prefer comedy, action, or thriller? Are movies better than books? In all cases? Explain.

I only like the first Ace movie. 2nd one was stupid, I thought.

Tyler,

I liked that movie. Do you know why Beavis and Butthead was moved in time slot on MTV? Do you know the scandal?

Austin Powers for a comedy movie- hands down. I've liked it ever since I could even understand most of the jokes.

Someone said something about musicals, I'd have to say my favorite musical is Repoman the Genetic Opera, and then The Music Man. There are so many good ones out there. Like Across the Universe, and Sweeny Todd, Chicago, and so many more reallly good ones.

My top 3 favorite movies are Baby Mama, Mamma Mia, and Marley and Me. I like Baby Mama because it was a comdey and the actors were great in the movie. I like Mamma Mia because there was some singing and the songs they were singing I knew. At the end of the movie there was a surpising ending.
I enjoyed Marley and Me because in the beinginning it is about a family, and there dog. Snice my family has a dog I thought I would enjoy the movie. Another reason I thought I would enjoy the movie was because I love dogs so much and since the movie is about a dog that's another reason I thought I would enjoy the movie. It truns out I did enjoy the movie. Though the ending is sad because the family has to put the dog to sleep. Before I see a movie that I really want to see, and if there's a book about the movie I read it first and then I watching the movie. I do that because I like to see if the book and the movie have any similarties, if the book and the movie are exactly the same, or if the book and the movie are completely different. Like in the movie My Sister's Keeper in the movie the sister with cancer she dies, but in the movie the sister with cancer lives, but the other sister ends up in a car accident and she dies. So, you can see that the movie and the book are completely different.

So, I can't decide what to write on here. There are tons of lame movies out there. I'm sick and tired directors making stupid pointless movies, ones with horrible storylines. They're spending millions of dollars on movies that get rated a 1 or a 2. And I won't even get started on some of the actors and actresses that star in the movies.

Skimming through this thread real quick, I'm a bit disappointed with the selection of titles here.
I don't intend to be the resident film snob, but I find it hard to believe that anyone's "legit favorite movie" was something pumped out so recently. (How fickle are your favorites?)
I'm not saying to exclusively watch silent movies, foreign films, or avant garde trash, but can we try and dig a little deeper here? If you have Netflix, you can instant stream 'M'. Try that one.

Unknown said...

Mickayla,
everyones interests differ. Who are you to say what someone should like ? ..yeah its your own opinion but you shouldnt be disappointed in other peoples insight on films.

Unknown said...

Everyone is intitled to their own opinion. Why does it matter if their movies aren't the ones that you would choose. Maybe it means something more to them then what your seeing. My favorite movie is a Walk to Remember. Is it old? No. Does it mean something to me? Yes. Its about a guy who accepts a girl for who she is and eventually falls in love with her. He grants her last wishes before she dies in a romatic way, giving her the ability to pass on with a somewhat completed life.

The departed has to be my favorite movie of all time

Unknown said...

I'm not glorifying old movies simply because they're old. Do you know how many terrible movies came out during the time when the Haye's Code was in full bloom? Quality films were few and far between.
I just fear that many filmmakers are taking the easy way out these days. If all you want to watch is light popcorn movies, more power to you.
The only thing- moviegoers like yourself are the majority. Big multiplexes aren’t going to book a film that may be a little off, because only a few people will see it. If they book another Date Movie or Disaster Movie or Twilight Sequel, they’re bound to make bags of money. How long before filmmakers just stop trying all together?

Anyone here see The Pacific of Band of Brothers? I myself am I huge fan.

Unknown said...

Catherine, what sort of scary films do you like best? It's one of my favorite genres.

Unknown said...

The ring is the scariest movie i've ever seen.

Unknown said...

fickled minded fools? haha. wow. niceee choice of words.

Unknown said...

Melissa, The Ring was alright. (Have you seen the original? I haven't, but I hear people rave about it.)
It was a pretty weak movie on the whole, but if there's one thing I can say about it, it did have some pretty odd images that could be considered disturbing.
If you like unsettling images over plot, I say check out Gummo. It has a non linear storyline, but it's fairly bizarre without being incomprehensible. The imagery is bound to stay with you for days after.

Unknown said...

Also Melissa, since you mentioned A Walk to Remember, if you're into romances, I recommend It Happened One Night. (It's actually one of my favorite movie endings of all time, if that tells you anything.)
The tension when Gable and Colbert is so thick, you could cut it with a knife.

Or, if you'd like to try something really fresh(Or not so fresh, actually) You could watch Kissed. Just saw that one over the weekend, super bizarre love story.

How can you not like a movie that's unrealistic? That's the whole point of a movie. To bring the imagination and ideas to life. People have just lost the concept of things somewhere along the line and I truely wonder if they'll ever find them again.
